Our Foundation's History
The Clarendon Foundation (Cheshire Homes) Inc. was incorporated in 1974 as a non-profit charitable corporation with the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations. The Clarendon Foundation is a member of the Leonard Cheshire International Global Alliance.
Our mission is to provide an opportunity for people with physical disabilities to live independently in the community in an environment that supports
them to:
- Continue their employment or proceed with education.
- Be as self-sufficient as possible.
Leonard Cheshire Disability
The Leonard Cheshire Foundation was established in 1948 by the late Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC, following the foundation of the first Cheshire Home in the UK. This Home was the first to enable disabled people to play an active part in making choices about their lives, which was ground-breaking at that time.
Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC devoted the rest of his life to expanding the everyday life choices of disabled people by establishing services to support them in the UK and across the world.
Today, Leonard Cheshire Disability exists to change attitudes towards disability and to serve disabled people around the world. It is a UK-based global organization working with independent Cheshire partner organizations in 54 countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Leonard Cheshire Disability supports 250 independently managed disability organizations that, in turn, support people with disabilities in their efforts to secure education, livelihoods, health care, rehabilitation, and a voice in their society. We also campaign to change attitudes and improve services.
